A F-DOPA PET scan is a medical imaging test that uses a special type of radioactive tracer called DOPA (dihydroxyphenylalanine) to visualize the functioning of cells in the brain and certain tumors. DOPA is taken up by cells that produce dopamine, a neurotransmitter that is important for movement and other functions in the brain. During the PET scan, the patient is injected with a small amount of the DOPA tracer, which emits signals that are detected by the PET scanner to produce detailed images of the brain and tumors. This test can be used to diagnose conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and certain types of tumors.

Test Preparation: Male: test requires an 8-hour fasting period, preferably overnight. If constipation is a concern, taking 4 charcoal tablets and 2 dulcolax tablets the night before the test is recommended. For diabetic patients taking metformin, it is advised to avoid this medication 48 hours before and after the contrast study. It is important to consult with your treating physician regarding any alternative medications during this period.
Female: Creatinine blood test reports required. 8 hours fasting (preferably overnight) is required. If patient has constipation, it is advisable to take 4 tablets charcoal and 2 tablets dulcolax in the night before. For diabetic Patients on metformin, it is suggested to avoid metformin 48hrs before and after contrast study. Pls speak with your treating physician for alternative medication. For Female patients of reproductive age, LMP is required to avoid any testing if pregnant, else Urine Pregnancy Test is required.
